When I look at an accessible website, I am not just checking whether it meets a checklist. I am looking at whether someone can move through the page, understand the content, complete forms, and use the main features without unnecessary barriers.

 WCAG and ADA: What I Would Check

Ensuring digital accessibility requires adherence to established guidelines like WCAG and ADA that promote inclusivity and equal access.

WCAG and the ADA are related, but I would not treat them as the same thing. WCAG gives me the technical accessibility criteria to test against, while the ADA is U.S. civil rights law that requires covered organizations to provide equal access to people with disabilities.

WCAG is developed by the W3C and is the main technical reference I would use when reviewing a website for accessibility. The current WCAG 2.2 standard organizes its requirements around four principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust, commonly shortened to POUR.

In practice, I would pay particular attention to areas such as keyboard access, focus order, contrast, text alternatives, captions, form labels, error handling, and controls that work without relying on a single type of input. These map directly to WCAG success criteria rather than being general design suggestions.

ADA Requirements for Websites

The ADA applies differently depending on the organization. Title II covers state and local governments, while Title III covers businesses that are open to the public. The Department of Justice states that the ADA’s accessibility obligations also apply to services, programs, goods, and activities offered online.

For state and local governments, the requirements are now particularly clear. A 2024 DOJ rule adopted WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the technical standard for web content and mobile apps under Title II.

After a 2026 extension, entities serving populations of 50,000 or more have until April 26, 2027, while smaller public entities and special district governments have until April 26, 2028.

Some of the practical areas DOJ highlights include:

Practical Ways to Improve Website Accessibility

I would start with the parts of the site people interact with every day. Navigation, forms, images, videos, and page structure usually give me the clearest opportunities to remove accessibility barriers.

  • Make everything usable from the keyboard: I should be able to reach links, menus, buttons, form fields, and other controls without touching a mouse. Visible focus indicators also make it clear where I am on the page.
  • Write useful alt text: For meaningful images, I describe what someone needs to understand from the image rather than starting with phrases such as “image of.” Decorative images usually do not need a spoken description.
  • Keep headings in a logical order: I use headings to describe the structure of the page, not simply to make text look larger. A clear <h1>, <h2>, <h3> hierarchy also gives screen-reader users a quicker way to move between sections.
  • Add captions and transcripts: Videos should have accurate captions, while audio-only content may need a transcript. I would also check captions manually rather than assuming automatically generated text is correct.
  • Check contrast instead of judging it by eye: For WCAG AA, normal text generally needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, while large text needs 3:1. I also avoid using color alone to communicate something important, such as whether a form field contains an error.
  • Make forms easy to understand: Every input should have a clear label. When something goes wrong, the error message should explain both the problem and what the user can do next. On touchscreens, controls also need enough space to interact with comfortably.
  • Give users control over moving content: I would be careful with autoplaying carousels, animations, pop-ups, and unexpected content changes. If something moves or updates automatically, users should have a way to pause, stop, or control it where required.
  • Use ARIA only when it adds information: Native HTML should be my first choice because elements such as <button>, <nav>, and <main> already carry useful semantics. I use ARIA when the HTML alone cannot describe a custom control or state clearly to assistive technology.

I would not try to fix accessibility through one feature or an overlay at the end. It works better when these decisions are part of the way I design, build, and test the site from the beginning.

Conclusion

When I look at accessible websites, the biggest lesson is that accessibility comes from lots of small decisions working together. Clear navigation, useful headings, readable contrast, keyboard support, captions, and well-labeled forms all make the experience easier to use in different ways.

I would use WCAG as the technical reference, but I would not stop at passing individual checks. The better goal is to build and test the site in a way that removes barriers early, then keep reviewing accessibility as the design and content change.
